Gabryel’s journey from São Paulo to the Netherlands: new beginnings at WAES

Moving to a new country can be a daunting experience, but it also opens doors to incredible opportunities. Gabryel’s journey from São Paulo (Brazil) to Eindhoven (the Netherlands) has been a transformative one, filled with challenges, growth, and exciting new beginnings. This is Gabyel’s story of adapting to a new culture, improving his skills, and finding his place in a leading technology company, ASML.

Adapting from São Paulo to Eindhoven

Gabryel: “I was born and raised in São Paulo, a bustling metropolis where I spent my entire life. Using my bike to navigate the city's busy streets was a daily routine. However, cycling in São Paulo had its complications.” The Netherlands feels like a second home to Gabryel. It's a country built with accessibility in mind, especially for cyclists.

“My first encounter with WAES was in 2022. Initially, my English skills were not up to par, which resulted in a few setbacks. But I was determined to improve.” After taking English classes for three months, Gabryel reapplied and successfully passed the interview.

Joining WAES and the path to ASML

After Gabryel got hired, WAES hosted the WAES Hiring Days in São Paulo. This was the perfect opportunity for Gabryel and the WAES team that was going to São Paulo to connect. “It was so much fun to meet a part of the WAES team already,” Gabryel says. “This event allowed me to meet people from the company and learn more about the Netherlands and the hiring process. It was a valuable experience that prepared me for the next steps.”

Upon arriving in the Netherlands, Gabryel underwent several interviews directly with companies he could potentially work for. Throughout this process, he received immense support from his People Manager and other colleagues at WAES. “They helped me not only with the technical aspects of the job but also with my presentation skills and building confidence in my English.”

Working at ASML

Gabryel secured a project at ASML, one of the leading technology companies in the Netherlands. ASML is renowned for creating lithography machines, which are crucial in the production of computer chips. While companies like Intel and Nvidia manufacture the chips, ASML provides the technology that makes this possible.

“Being part of ASML means contributing to the advancement of technology. While I may not see my direct impact, I am proud to be part of a team that drives innovation forward.”

I have found a new place to call home. Embracing new beginnings in the Netherlands has opened doors to endless possibilities, and I am excited for the road ahead.

Integration and community

“WAES has been instrumental in helping me integrate into Dutch society,” Gabryel states. “There are many Latin Americans here, and WAES organizes events that foster a sense of community and belonging. From Friday drinks to summer barbecues and boat tours, these activities help us connect, socialize, and feel comfortable in our new environment.”

The Netherlands has become a place where Gabryel feels secure and comfortable. “While I still have some way to go before I am fully adapted, I can envision myself staying here for a long time. The journey from São Paulo to the Netherlands has been filled with learning, growth, and new experiences, and I look forward to what the future holds.”

Moving to a new country is never easy, but it can be incredibly rewarding. Gabryel looks at his transition from São Paulo to the Netherlands as a journey of personal and professional growth. “With the support of WAES and the opportunity to work at ASML, I have found a new place to call home. Embracing new beginnings in the Netherlands has opened doors to endless possibilities, and I am excited for the road ahead.”
